Sister Verna Williams Johnson was born to the union of the late Reverend Nathaniel Williams and Viola Norwood Williams on December 25, 1938.  She surrendered to the sovereign call of God’s sunset on October 28, 2022.

Sister Verna was converted and baptized under the leadership of Reverend Harrison Geder at the Day’s Chapel A.M.E. Church, in Clinton, LA.  She was a devoted member of the choir at Day’s Chapel A.M.E. Church. She later moved her membership to the Union Chapel Baptist Church in Clinton, LA, under the leadership of Reverend Oral Marshall.  She continued to sing in the choir, often performing solos and was a faithful prayer leader in meetings and revival services.  After relocating to Texas, Verna attended Muddy Creek Baptist Church in Quitman, TX., and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola, TX.

Verna was united in holy matrimony to Jake Wilfred (J.W.) Johnson in 1958.  From this union was born four children.         

Verna was a graduate of East Feliciana Industrial Training High School, Clinton, LA, in 1958. She continued her education at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, where she earned a degree in Dietetics.   She worked diligently for many years and was employed by the East Feliciana Parish School System.  She touched the lives of many through her work and unselfish dedication. Verna was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and was compassionate about her love for her children and family.  She retired on January 31, 1999.

Verna leaves to cherish her precious memories, daughters; Amy Johnson, Long Beach, CA; Patricia Ann Johnson, Mineola, TX; Betty Johnson (Warren) Payne, Long Beach, CA; Doris Sue Johnson (John) Parker, Mineola, TX; a sister, Daisy McClinton, Baton Rouge, LA; brothers, Frank Williams, Houma, LA; Wallace (Frances) Williams, Maplewood, NJ; Wilbert J. Williams, Greensburg, LA; Alfred J. (Linda) Williams, Baton Rouge, LA; one granddaughter, Irish Nicole J. (Terrell) Monagan, Long Beach, CA; three great-grandchildren, Ikneise Heaven-Grace Monagan, Nehemiah Royalray Monagan and Italy Monagan, Long Beach, CA; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Wilfred (J.W.) Johnson, parents, Reverend Nathaniel Williams and Viola Norwood Williams, three sisters, Verla Williams, LaBlanche W. Richard and Ella Mae Williams; two brothers, Lionel Williams and Ishmael Williams; and brother-in-law, Ivory L. McClinton.

 

A funeral service for Ms. Verna Johnson will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 15 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola. Viewing and visitation will be held one hour before the service beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Graveside service will follow at Cedars Mmeorial Gardens in Mineola.
