Rolan Ernest Banks, 90, of Quitman, passed away on April 30, 2026.
He was born November 29, 1935, in Quitman to Robert Oren Banks and Mauritta June (Shamburger) Banks. Rolan graduated from Quitman High School in 1953 and entered the United States Marine Corps on February 24, 1954. He served his country with pride and dedication for more than 41 years, retiring on November 29, 1995, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, he was a pilot and completed three tours in Vietnam. One story he often shared was safely landing a C-130 aircraft after one engine had been shot out—something he took in stride, though it spoke volumes about his skill and composure.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Rolan lived in Garland for about a decade. His love of flying never faded, and he spent those years in several different business ventures on of which was selling private planes out of Love Field in Dallas. Family time often meant taking to the skies rather than the road, trading Sunday drives for Sunday flights.
Rolan eventually returned home to Quitman, where he built a life rooted in hard work and independence. In 2017, he founded Rocket Towing and remained actively involved in the business until his passing. Even at 90 years old, he could still be found at the office daily, often putting in long hours. His work ethic set a strong example for those around him.
He had a curious mind and a genuine interest in how things worked. He enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, and he spent many hours watching programs like Modern Marvels and the History Channel, especially anything related to military history. He also had a well-known habit of buying in bulk. If he needed one item, he was just as likely to come home with twenty.
Rolan could come across as tough, but those who knew him understood the depth of his kindness. If he cared about someone, he would go out of his way to help, often without being asked. Rolan also loved his many feral cats, he referred to as his democats making sure they were always fed although they didn’t always earn it.
Rolan will be remembered for his faithful military service, his hard work ethic, and the quiet ways he showed care for others.
He greets in Heaven his parents, Oren and Mauritta Banks; two sisters, Sonya Kluger and Pamela Davis; and former spouse, Frances Banks.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Tanya Wichterman of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, and Karen Banks of Tyler, TX; one sister, Sharai Lewis of Rockwall, TX; two grandchildren, Nick Wichterman and wife Kate of Florida, and Drew Wichterman of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A celebration of life for Rolan Banks will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 11, 2026 at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations, with a light meal for family and close friends to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Rolan to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
