Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Nathan Hayes Atwood, 53, of Quitman, passed away on August 21, 2026, at his home. Hayes was born on November 3, 1972, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Charles and Browne Atwood.

Hayes moved to Quitman with his family while he was in elementary school in the early 1980s. He graduated from Quitman High School in 1991 and later earned his bachelor’s degree from UT Tyler and Texas A&M University. He spent many years working for International Trucks.

In 1998, Hayes married Kelley Kerr at the First United Methodist Church in Quitman. The two spent much of their married life in Arkansas and later, Argyle, Texas before returning home just 2 years ago. Hayes was a member of the Winnsboro Church of Christ.

Hayes had a larger than life personality. He brought fun and laughter everywhere he went. He was truly one of a kind and made everyone he met feel like a friend. He loved the Lord, riding dirt bikes, working out, and “beautifying” the land his family lives on. His dogs held a particularly special place in his heart.

More than anything, Hayes loved his family. He treasured the time he spent with them and with the many friends he made throughout his life. The hole left by his absence will be an impossible one to fill, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. While his time here was far too short, his loved ones find comfort in knowing he is with Jesus.

Hayes is preceded in death by his father, Charles Atwood; grandmother, Fern Flood (Meemaw); and his cousin, Justin Toms.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Kelley Kerr Atwood, Megan Brett Atwood, Nathan James Atwood, and Luke Williams; his mother, Browne Atwood; sister, Ashlea and husband Patrick Wupperman. As well as his nieces and nephews, Grant, Ella, and Gavin Hayes Wupperman and Ben and Ava Burroughs.

Memorial service for Hayes Atwood will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Winnsboro Church of Christ with Pastor Colby Clapp officiating. The family will receive friends during visitation on Friday, August 28, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations.

Flowers are appreciated, but if desired, donations in memory of Hayes can be made to Winnsboro Church of Christ (https://winnsboro.church/give).
