Melinda Gail Kirby Lawson, 66, of Quitman, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on June 11, 2026, at a hospital in Tyler, Texas.

Melinda was born on November 17, 1959, in Canton, Texas, to Larry Dean Kirby and Mary Kate Blalock Kirby. She spent her entire life in Quitman and was a faithful member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church.

Melinda was previously married to Benny William McFarland, father of Tricia Lee Griffith, Chris McFarland ,Erick McFarland, and Brittney Ratliff. They still remained friends and both cared for each other dearly.

In 2001, Melinda married Jim Lawson. They shared many happy years together until Jim's passing in 2019. Their marriage was filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Melinda had a passion for travel and enjoyed seeing new places. While she loved visiting destinations such as New York City and Las Vegas, her favorite place was always the beach, where she found peace and happiness. She had a compassionate heart, especially for animals, and never hesitated to take in a stray that needed care and affection.

Above all else, Melinda treasured her family. She spent much of her time making memories with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She often shared adventures and laughter with her two "partners in crime"—her beloved grandson, Jaxon Ratliff, and her best friend and cousin, Shannon White. Their special bond was one of the greatest blessings of her life.

Melinda was preceded in death by her parents, Larry Dean Kirby and Mary Kate Blalock Kirby, and by her husband, Jim Lawson.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Brittany Ratliff and husband Jeremy of Quitman; son, Erick McFarland and wife Aletha of Van; daughter, Tricia Lee Griffith and husband Rodney of Tyler; son, Chris McFarland and wife April of Marshall; brother, Michael Kirby and wife Missy of Quitman; grandson, Jackson Ratliff; as well as numerous other grandchildren, extended family members, and many friends who will miss her dearly.

Melinda's kindness, love for family, generous spirit, and compassion for animals will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
