Funeral service for Mary Sue Thompson, 94, of Coke, is scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday, December 21, 2018 at Lowe Funeral Home with Brother Fred Morrow officiating. Graveside will follow at Myrtle Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Mary Sue Thompson was born in Quitman on November 21, 1924 to Julius and Lula May (Hazlewood) Kirkland. In 1940 she married the love of her life, James Wilson Thompson. The two were married 33 years at the time of his passing in 1973. Mary and James moved to Quitman from Bridgeport, Texas in 1959.

Mary was a homemaker but also worked for Dick Hurley’s country store in Yantis for 10 years. She enjoyed being outside. She loved farming, raising dairy cattle, and anything else there was to do on a farm. She was chairman of the board for Farm Service Agency for many years and was a member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church.

Mary passed away at her home Tuesday afternoon, December 18, 2018.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Lula May Kirkland; loving husband of 33 years, James Wilson Thompson Sr.; and one grandson, James Wilson Thompson III.

Left to cherish her memory are her four sons, James Wilson Thompson Jr. and wife Nancy of Winnsboro, Joe Franklin Thompson and wife Sue of Garland, Billye Gene Thompson and wife Tina of Coke, and Bobby Clayton Thompson and wife Vicki of Coke; two daughters, Bartha Sharp and husband Bob of Coke, and Sandra Sue Bailey and husband Joe of Coke; brother, Joe Allen Kirkland and wife Barbara of Alexandria, Alabama; 11 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Serving as pallbearers are James Paul Sharp, Joe William Bailey, Brandon Adams, Larry Sandifer, Chris Davis, and Jose Guillermo Deanda.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation for Mary’s special sitters, the nurses and staff at Reflections Hospice, and especially her nurse, Kelly, for their kindness, compassion, care, and support over the years.
