Janet Inez (Johnson) Lumley, 89, of Quitman, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, in Quitman.
Janet was born on December 16, 1936, in Dallas County, Texas, to Dudley Oscar Johnson, Jr. and Violet Borchardt Johnson. On November 12, 1955, she married the love of her life, Gail Lumley, in Mesquite, Texas, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned more than 70 years.
A proud Mesquite Skeeter, Janet grew up in Mesquite and raised her own family there. In 1987, she and Gail moved to Quitman, and in 1990 they purchased their beloved home on Lake Fork, where they made countless memories together.
Janet was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Quitman. She devoted much of her time to serving her church family, volunteering whenever needed and faithfully serving as the church secretary. Her quiet dedication and servant's heart touched the lives of many.
As a young woman, Janet loved basketball and played throughout high school as well as in her church league. She also enjoyed being a majorette, carrying with her a cheerful spirit and enthusiasm that remained throughout her life.
Janet found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved vacationing at Matagorda Beach, where she collected enough seashells over the years to fill an entire bathtub. She enjoyed reading a good book, preparing meals for those she loved, and spending precious time with her family. Above all, Janet treasured her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the greatest blessing of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jill Johnson Barclay; and her brother, Dudley Oscar Johnson III.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Gail Lumley of Quitman; her sons, Mark Lumley and wife, Donna, of Quitman and Scott Lumley and wife, Jana, of Fort Worth; her daughter, Lisa Lumley Capps and husband, Jerry, of Quitman; her brother, Jim Wayne Johnson and wife, Sandra; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
A funeral service for Janet will be held Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Quitman. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Quitman City Cemetery.
Janet's kindness, unwavering faith, and deep love for her family will be remembered always. Her gentle presence leaves a legacy of love that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
