James Vinson Burks, age 92, passed away on December 18, 2025, in Princeton, Texas. He was born on March 10, 1933, in Cartwright, Texas, to Vinson Monroe Burks and Leba Mae (Denham) Burks.
James lived most of his life in Bowie County, primarily in Texarkana. Over the years, he also lived in Cartwright and Dallas, and lived fifteen years in Quitman before moving to McKinney and later Princeton. He moved to McKinney to be closer to his son, a decision that meant a great deal to him.
He was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Quitman. James was a long-time member of the Optimist Club and was heavily involved at the Forever Young Activity Center, where he proudly served as the doorkeeper and enjoyed many games of 42 with friends.
On September 1, 1950, James married Margaret Shipp at the First Baptist Church parsonage in Garland, Texas. They shared 63 years together before her passing.
James owned and operated five Dairy Queen locations, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and fishing—especially fly fishing. He loved camping, boating, and anything related to the water, including skiing. He and Margaret also enjoyed traveling together by RV.
After moving to McKinney, James found simple joy in watching and counting the cars that passed by, often sharing his observations with family. While living in Quitman, he especially treasured his Friday visits with his sister, when they would grocery shop, run errands, and go out to eat together. He was a caring and generous man; even when he received Meals on Wheels, he would often turn around and give those meals to others he knew were in need, always thinking of someone else before himself.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Vinson Monroe Burks and Leba Mae (Denham) Burks; wife, Margaret Burks; daughter, Donna Sue Gustafson; and two sisters, Ozell Hill and Dale Shotwell.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Mike Burks and wife Linda of McKinney; two sisters, Lynda Phillips of Winnsboro and Bobbie Edwards and husband Bob of Georgetown; grandchildren, Michelle Sutton, Josh Burks (Caty), Ali Burks (Ryan), and Andy Gustafson (Meagan); 8 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A private family service for Mr. Burks will be held in his honor.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of James to Faith Baptist Church Quitman (PO Box 1495, Quitman, TX 75783)
