James "Jimmy" Franklin Steck, 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Quitman, Texas, on July 12, 2026.

Jimmy was born on February 5, 1953, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Eugene Steck and Marilyn Francis Steck. When he was just five years old, his family moved to Quitman, Texas.

For many years, Jimmy owned and operated Wood County Auto Works Paint and Body Shop, with his beloved brother Eddie Steck where his talent, hard work, and ability to fix just about anything earned the respect of those who knew him. He had a gift for bringing old vehicles back to life and found great satisfaction in rebuilding and repairing cars and motorcycles. Whether it was a restoration project or helping someone get back on the road, Jimmy took pride in his work and was always willing to lend a hand.

Jimmy also had a passion for dirt track racing. The thrill of competition, the roar of the engines, and the friendships formed around the racetrack were some of his favorite parts of life. His love of automobiles wasn't simply a profession—it was a lifelong passion that shaped who he was.

He was the kind of neighbor everyone hoped to have—always ready to help when someone needed a hand, never expecting anything in return. His quiet acts of willingness left a lasting impression on many lives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Steck, and his brother, Eddie Steck.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Marilyn Francis Odum; his sons, Jason Steck and wife, Lucy, of Quitman, Brian Steck and wife, Kristie, of Mineola, James Steck and wife, Pam, of Quitman, and Adam Steck and wife, Julie, of Mineola; his daughter, Holly Seley of Tyler; his sister, Sharon; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and neighbors who will miss him greatly.

Jimmy's legacy is one of hard work and a lifelong love of cars, motorcycles, and racing.

The family will welcome friends for a Memorial Visitation on Monday, July 20, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations.
