James Michael "Mickey" Barnett, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, in Tyler, Texas. He was born on November 13, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, to James Henry Barnett and Sarah Ann (Wilks) Barnett.

Mickey’s early years were spent in Coke, Texas, and he joined the Quitman Independent School District in seventh grade after the school merger, setting the stage for many lifelong friendships. He graduated from Quitman High School in 1966, where he distinguished himself not only academically but also athletically, excelling on the football field. His achievements and those of his beloved Glenda, whom he would later marry, were recognized when they were named Mr. and Mrs. QHS their senior year. Mickey went on to attend East Texas University in Commerce for a year, continuing his passion for football at the collegiate level.

After his year at college, Mickey answered the call of duty and entered the United States Army. He served his country proudly and bravely, earning two Purple Hearts, an enduring testament to his courage and dedication. His sense of honor and responsibility was felt by all who knew him.

Post-military life saw Mickey embark on an accomplished career as a high voltage engineer. He lent his expertise to major companies including Amico and Dow Chemical, among many others. His career granted him the opportunity to travel extensively, both across the United States and abroad.

In 1970, he married the love of his life, Glenda Neal.  While in Quitman, he helped build the Quitman Youth Foundation baseball fields, and also coached baseball for the foundation. He also was a faithful Christian and attended church at the First United Methodist Church of Quitman. 

Mickey’s love for the outdoors was evident through his passion for hunting and fishing, especially quail hunting. At one time, he had a faithful hunting dog, and later in life he found joy on the golf course.

Though he and Glenda had no children of their own, Mickey was affectionately known as “Uncle Mickey” to his niece and nephew, and great-niece and great-nephew, and he loved to spoil them rotten!

He is survived by his devoted wife, Glenda Barnett of Yantis; his brother, Bobby Barnett of Houston; his sister-in-law, Fran Price; his nephew, Jarrett Price and wife Fendy; his niece, Jennifer Thorpe and husband Ben; his beloved great-niece, Juliette, and great-nephew, Jacson; and numerous friends whose lives he touched.

Mickey is preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah Barnett, and his brother, Danny Barnett.

Family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 11:00AM Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations with  Funeral Services to follow at 11:00AM at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations. Burial will be at 4:00PM at Brushy Cemetery in Buffalo, Texas.
