Donald J. Neighbors, a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in Quitman, Texas. Born on July 23, 1933, in Winnsboro, Texas, Donald led a life marked by dedication to family, education, and his community.

He was married to Bennie Novell Reneau in 1952 until her passing. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, a foundation upon which Donald built a life that brought joy to those around him.

Donald was an alumnus of the University of Texas, where he attended from 1951 to 1955, on a track scholarship ultimately graduating with a Bachelor Degree. His passion for teaching and coaching soon found him at the front of classrooms and sports fields, where he imparted knowledge and skills to young athletes. He coached and taught at Dumas High School, Pickton High School, and Quitman High School from 1971 until his well-earned retirement. During his coaching career, while he excelled in all sports, it was track that held a special place in his heart. Donald’s enthusiasm for athletics inspired countless students, many of whom have carried the lessons learned from him throughout their lives. Throughout these years, he remained a devoted Texas Longhorn supporter, showcasing his unwavering pride in his alma mater.

He is survived by his beloved sons, Brian Neighbors and wife Monique of Quitman, and Michael Brent Neighbors of Yantis. Donald also leaves behind his brother, Lon Neighbors of Quitman; brother-in-law, Ricky Reneau and wife Cindy of Winnsboro; sister-in-law, Shirley Reneau; and a legacy of love through his grandchildren: Michael Brandon Neighbors and wife Heather of Mineola; Victoria Rushing and husband Jason of Mineola; Christopher Brant Osbourn of Sulphur Springs; Sydney Lugo and husband Joe of Tyler; Tanner Neighbors and wife Lauren of Quitman; Colton Searcy and Vaida of Pittsburg; Robert Perez of Sulphur Springs; Renegade Perez and Kara of Quitman; and Jordan Reed and husband Dylan of Riley Springs. In addition to his grandchildren, he will be remembered by his 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jewel Neighbors; wife, Bennie Neighbors; his sister-in-law, Pat Neighbors; brother-in-law Larry Reneau; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Donald J. Neighbors will be remembered as a man of great integrity, passionate about teaching and coaching, and devoted to his family and friends. His spirit and contributions to the lives of others will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
