Cheryl Watson Mayborn, 79, of Quitman, Texas, passed into the presence of the Lord on April 19, 2025. She was born in Longview, Texas on September 18, 1945, the daughter of Tom Watson and Dorothy Beebe Watson. Cheryl and her older sister, Lynn, moved yearly to towns across Texas and Oklahoma. These moves aided Cheryl in developing the habit of never meeting a stranger. After settling in Dallas for high school, Cheryl attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas where she enjoyed the drill team and the French Club. After graduation, Cheryl attended the University of Texas at Austin. She married Donald Porter Mayborn, her high school sweetheart on December 20, 1965, and they had three children.
Cheryl’s life was forever changed in 1975 when she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and she became a member of Grace Bible Church in Dallas. She always said she “made a joyful noise in the choir,” loved working in the nursery, and taught loads of children’s Sunday school classes. Cheryl volunteered at the West Dallas Mercy Street Ministries, Fair Park Friendship Center and Crisis Pregnancy Center while raising her children. Cheryl also traveled to Europe aiding Don with his buying trips to England, Belgium, and Holland. She also traveled the world to support missionaries in China, India and Thailand. Cheryl even went to Russia to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Engels, Saratov and Oblast.
As a devoted homemaker and talented seamstress, she poured her heart into everything she did. Cheryl’s passion for crafts and knitting was more than a hobby—it was a ministry. She lovingly knitted hundreds of caps for children battling cancer, spreading warmth and care through every stitch. In 2020, she and Don made their home in Quitman, TX. Cheryl was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, where her kind spirit and generous heart touched many. In her battle with Alziemer’s she always remained a loving and sweet personality. She was full of smiles, tenderness toward others, and thoughtfulness to everyone she met.
Above all, Cheryl cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy came from raising her children and being “Chichi” to her beloved grandchildren. She is preceded by her parents Tom and Dorothy Watson. Cheryl is survived by her loving husband Don Mayborn; children Lauren Bryan and husband Eric, Katie Fuerst and husband Tom, and Will Mayborn and wife Tina; Sister Lynn Guy; grandchildren Max, Caleb, Chloe, Abby, Ethan, Avery, Micah, Elizabeth, and Isaac; along with many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly. In lieu of flowers consider a memorial donation in Cheryl’s name to: Carson Leslie Foundation in Dallas or the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County.
